Dr. Liangliang Jiang is a full-time Senior Research Scientist in the Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering at the University of Calgary. He earned his Ph.D. under the supervision of two U.S. National Academy of Engineering members, Professors John Chen and S.M. Farouq Ali.
As the project lead, Dr. Jiang mentors PhD students and serves as an external supervisor to several international universities including the University of Houston, the University of Adelaide, etc. His research is at the intersection of energy and environmental sciences, with a primary focus on hydrogen production, clean coal utilization, underground coal gasification, geothermal energy, geological sequestration of CO2 and H2, and the sustainable development of unconventional oil and gas resources. Dr. Jiang worked in industry before returning to the University of Calgary to lead research initiatives.
Dr. Jiang has authored and co-authored approximately 100 peer-reviewed articles in international journals, including Advanced Functional Materials, Energy Storage Materials, The Innovation, Engineering, Chemical Engineering Journal, Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews, Applied Energy, Energy Conversion and Management, and Journal of Cleaner Production, including the inaugural cover article of Energy Reviews. He currently serves on the editorial boards of several journals, including The Innovation (IF 32.1), SusMat (IF 28.4), Engineering (IF 12.8), Energy Reviews (IF 12.6), International Journal of Mining Science and Technology (IF 11.7), International Journal of Coal Science & Technology (IF 8.3), Petroleum, Natural Gas Industry B, Green Carbon, EcoEnergy, Green and Smart Mining Engineering, and Deep Underground Science & Engineering. He is also a member of the Applied Energy Academy (IF 11.2).
Dr. Jiang has received the Outstanding Reviewer Award from Applied Energy, the Excellent Young Expert Award from Engineering (twice), and the High Impact Paper Award. He has been nominated three times for the prestigious ENI Award, often referred to as the “Nobel Prize in Energy,” and has been recognized three times as an Excellent Ph.D. Graduate in Canada. In addition, he serves as a reviewer and expert panelist for government agencies and industry-funded research programs in the U.S. and Canada.
Committed to advancing the transition to a climate-resilient energy system, Dr. Jiang actively collaborates with leading researchers from globally renowned institutions, including Stanford University, ETH Zurich, the University of Alberta, the University of Houston, Tsinghua University, Peking University, and the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences.
